Another Package Delivered
At Jessica's then-weekly OB/GYN appointment two weeks ago, Jessica's cervix was dilated to 3 cm. A week later, there hadn't been much progress with the cervix dilated to 3-4 cm. The OB/GYN brought up the topic of induction, and given how things went when Audra was delivered, Jessica said she wasn't opposed to it. The OB/GYN checked the hospital schedule and scheduled us for next week (now today) with a 4:00 am hospital check-in.
Jessica didn't feel any strong contractions in the days leading up to the scheduled induction, so we were pretty confident that we'd make it to the induction. Jessica's mom flew in last Friday to be Audra's caregiver and to lend another set of hands for the upcoming events. In fact, she freed me to work on a long-standing house project.
We packed our hospital go bags a couple of weeks earlier in anticipation of an earlier arrival, but alas, here we are.
2:55 am: Jessica and I woke up, and I showered while Jessica finished packing the remaining items in the car.
3:20 am: Jessica and I left the house and drove to the hospital.
3:45 am: With no traffic and favorable traffic signals, we arrived at the hospital relatively quickly and checked into the L&D ward.
4:10 am: The nurse started Jessica's IV. Jessica's cervix was dilated to 5 cm and was 70% effaced.
5:00 am: The nurse started Jessica's Pitocin and gave her the 1st round of Group B strep antibiotics.
6:30 am: Jessica's OB-GYN arrived and introduced the secondary OB-GYN while she would be at the office.
9:00 am: The anesthesiologist administered Jessica's epidural, and Jessica receive the 2nd round of Group B strep antibiotics. I called my parents to let them know how we were doing in the hospital.
9:30 am: The secondary OB/GYN broke Jessica's amniotic sac. Jessica's cervix was dilated 7 to 8 cm and the baby was at station -1. Jessica's mom and dad (her dad drove overnight to be here) arrived with Audra and came into the room to hang out with us.
11:00 am: Jessica's cervix had progress to 8 to 9 cm and 90% effaced. Baby dropped down a little bit from station -1.
12:15 pm: Jessica's cervix is fully dilated and 100% effaced. The attending nurse informs the primary OB/GYN that Jessica is ready to deliver!
1:00 pm: The attending nurse returned and made preparations for delivery. She also administered Jessica's 3rd round of Group B strep antibiotics. OB/GYN is en route.
1:25 pm: The delivery team of the primary and secondary OB/GYNs as well as a multitude of nurses descended upon Jessica. It's time to push! The doctors and nurses all commented on how awesome Jessica did with her all of her pushes. And after ~10 pushes in 3 contractions...
1:32 pm: Brooke Tien made her entrance in the world!
