Mullet Festival 2014

Mullet Festival is the town's big thing every year. Apparently, mullet refers to the fish and not a hairstyle. They have live music, vendors, carnival rides, and various other activities. We figured we had to check it out. Chi got the low-down on the best food vendors and things to do from some co-workers. We decided to go Sunday morning, because we wanted to avoid too much of a crowd. When we got there, not all of the vendors had opened shop yet. We went straight to the pony rides, and Audra was a champ. All my pictures were just from our cell phones, because we didn't bring the big camera out.

She saw the "train ride" and insisted on going on that, even though she was still on the horse. I was a little worried, because the last time she went on a small train ride, she freaked out a little, and this ride didn't allow adults on it. She loved it and did great, though. She was actually really upset when it was over and that we wouldn't let her go on it again (it was a non-trivial $5 per ride!).

After that, we went to see what we could find to eat. Chi ended up picking a Bavarian cream and chocolate funnel cake--it was delicious but also massive, and I ended up carrying it around for a long time before we finished it. While Chi was getting his funnel cake, I spotted a face-painting booth and asked Audra if she wanted her face painted. She said yes, but I was wary because she says yes a lot and changes her mind. The lady doing it was so nice, and Audra sat well the whole time.

After that, we waited around for the carnival rides to open up. Audra was an inch taller than the minimum for a lot of rides, so she was very excited to get to go on them. She didn't really smile or show enthusiasm much during the day, but she would get impatient waiting, and we knew she enjoyed taking it all in.

After we used up all the tickets, we headed over to the main mullet booth so Chi could get his mullet on; he got both fried and smoked mullet. I went and searched for some kettle corn and shaved ice, because they are Audra's festival staples. On the way out the door, we also got some alligator on a stick, which was really tasty and Audra and I got to share a first together.

After that, we headed home. It was an hour after Audra's normal nap time, so she konked out easily on the short drive (after checking out her face paint in her car mirror).

And that was our Mullet Festival 2014 experience.
