Curious and Independent

This month, we have started two new weekly activities: Story Time and Kindermusik. It is awesome to have weekly structured activities that get us out of the house and let her see other babies! She hasn't been in similar situations before, so seeing how she processed and acted in both settings was really interesting and telling.

Audra likes to assess the situation before she will let anything happen. Basically, she wants to sit there and stare for about 5 min, and if you try to do something with her, she freaks out. Once she has a good gauge on things, she becomes very independent. While other babies stick by their moms, Audra is crawling across the room. At story timee, she will crawl to the middle right in front of the librarian and turn around and look at everyone. She will occasionally look back at the librarian, especially if she is reading a part of the book with great emphasis. She has no interest in staying in my lap; in fact, she is usually on a carpet square by the time story time actually starts. She has yet to get cranky, thank goodness. After one of the sessions, Audra was crawling all around and started to head to the door. I said something like, "you trying to leave without me, kid?" The other mom then mentioned it was nice that she was so independent.

Chi took her to the Saturday story time for all ages this past weekend and she got to color for the first time! Even better, she didn't try to eat the crayon (at first):

It is really hard to get her to smile when we are someplace new. She pretty much has this look on her face the whole time we are at the library.

At Kindermusik, she is very much the same. She will sit nicely by me or in my lap when she has a noisemaker in hand, but when there is nothing keeping her attention, she is on the move. There were a few times where we were all standing and dancing, and while the other babies enjoyed being held by their moms (and a dad), Audra just wanted down. At one point, the instructor turned down the lights for some quiet and relaxing time, and Audra was just climbing up on me and slapping my shoulder/chest. I think she was hungry. As we ended up the class, Audra crawled up to the instructor (who was sitting on the floor beside me) and practically climbed up her lap.
